An additional trial began Tuesday to determine whether he’ll have to pay her even more. Carroll, an author and former Elle magazine columnist, made her sexual-assault allegations against Trump public in 2019, when New York Magazine published an excerpt of her book, which alleged he assaulted her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room. In the aftermath, she filed a pair of related lawsuits against Trump.

How Trump Became Unstoppable in Iowa

INDIANOLA, Iowa—As he stood on the brink of a seemingly unstoppable march to another Republican presidential nomination, Donald Trump couldn’t stop thinking about all the ways he had been betrayed. “Do you think this is fun? Actually?” the former president mused. “It’s not fun,” he said, “but we’re getting our point across.”The hundreds of devoted supporters who had braved subzero temperatures Sunday to cram into a second-floor auditorium at the Simpson College student union, half an hour south of Des Moines, hung on Trump’s every word as he riffed for nearly two hours. The crowd was dotted with white caps bearing the words “TRUMP CAUCUS CAPTAIN” in embroidered gold letters, and the former president wore one himself—a totem of the ruthlessly professional organization that Trump’s campaign has built, a far cry from the slapdash operation that failed to deliver him Iowa in early 2016.

The book itself suggested otherwise — that Mr. Scott was not only as fixated on his own color as the critics he scorned but also as determined to make use of it. Walker, whom Mr. Scott evidently sees as his historic peers. To be sure, the substance of Mr. Carson’s commentary on race did resemble Mr. Scott’s. That, to me, is racism.”But unlike Mr. Scott, Mr. Carson rarely discussed race of his own volition, on or off the stump. So where Mr. Carson ran largely as a conventional evangelical Republican candidate — racial dog whistles and all — Mr. Scott actively tried and failed to make a race-based message connect.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s crusade has earned him the enmity of many of his colleagues and left him increasingly isolated. Photo: EVELYN HOCKSTEIN/REUTERSIf anyone in Washington expects Sen. Tommy Tuberville to back down, he is here to dispel that idea. “I hate to hold people hostage like this,” the Alabama Republican says, sitting in a barren anteroom of his Capitol Hill office suite. “They have nothing to do with this. Do you fight for the Constitution?”

For a change, the central problem facing the candidates in Wednesday night’s Republican debate wasn’t necessarily Donald Trump—yet the men and woman who would be president had little better idea how to solve it. Tuesday’s off-year election offered devastating new evidence of the unpopularity of the Republican Party’s positioning on abortion. Yet even as the party collectively reeled from this setback, with lawmakers and operatives squabbling over how to move forward, the party’s presidential candidates struggled to offer an alternative approach. Taken together, their responses on the issue were a revealing glimpse into the dilemma vexing the GOP after a series of bruising election losses

CHANTILLY, Va.—The Republican Party’s great hope sat scrunched in the back of his gubernatorial SUV, acknowledging the high-stakes gamble he has undertaken. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has put all his political capital on the line in Tuesday’s statehouse elections, hoping to prove that a bluish state can be persuaded to go for conservative governance and restrictions on abortion. “I don’t know how to hedge my bets,” said Youngkin, the lanky, affable former private-equity executive elected in 2021. I think that we are driving towards an outcome that I think is best for Virginia, and therefore I’m going to go to work with everything I have in order to try to deliver.”

Photo: Jim Watson/AFP/Getty ImagesTo many on the left, the Israel-Hamas war is spurring what feels like a permanent rupture, when previously sublimated differences become impossible to ignore and everyone must choose sides. The weeks since the Hamas attacks have riven the liberal coalition, pitting erstwhile allies against each other as ugly accusations fly in both directions. From the halls of power in Washington to street protests and social media, progressives find themselves at odds with those they once saw as kindred spirits.

Ron DeSantis refused to say how he would respond if one of his children is gay. DeSantis has fought to pass restrictions in Florida on how gender identity and other topics can be taught. But when asked by Time Magazine how he would respond if one of his three kids turned out to be gay or trans, he didn't have much to say. DeSantis' presidential campaign has been struggling, to put it mildly. As of today, according to FiveThirtyEight, DeSantis trails Trump by nearly 40 percentage points in major national polls.

CNN Business —The big news in crypto this week came via a court filing in Texas. FTX, the crypto giant that is led by arguably the most powerful person in the industry, is under investigation by Texas regulators for selling unregistered securities. FDIC, OCC, SEC, DOL, FBI, US Treasury and IRS have all stepped up their crypto enforcement efforts. The crypto lawyer I spoke with told me that those who prefer the CFTC over the SEC fall into two camps. I interviewed Saylor last year for CNN’s crypto interactive (“The Bitcoin Billionaire” is what we dubbed him).
